As part of our ongoing work in advancing legal research and human rights across Africa, AIDER participated in the Joint Stakeholder Submission for Ethiopia’s 2024 Universal Periodic Review (UPR), coordinated by the Centre for Human Rights at Birmingham City University (BCU).
The submission reflects an evidence-based assessment of Ethiopia’s human rights landscape and includes key recommendations focused on:
- Strengthening democratic institutions and judicial independence
- Addressing violations related to conflict and internal displacement
- Enhancing protections for civil society, media, and human rights defenders
- Improving access to justice and reducing impunity
- Promoting inclusive governance, minority rights, and gender equality
Why the UPR Process Matters
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a critical mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council that allows for peer review of each UN Member State’s human rights record. Civil society contributions like this are essential for holding governments accountable and pushing forward concrete reforms.
Through this submission, AIDER and our collaborators aim to ensure that Ethiopia’s UPR includes voices from affected communities, legal experts, and frontline defenders — not just official state narratives.
